Kitchen Sink Materials

When it comes to kitchen sink materials, your options include; stainless steel, enameled cast iron, solid surface, and composite.

Stainless steel is the least expensive option and also the most common one. When it comes to stainless steel, the gauge is important. The lower the gauge is the heavier and more durable the steel will be. You should also pay attention to the chrome and nickel content of the steel because it will affect the quality. The chrome adds strength and the nickel prevents corrosion. Ideally, you should have a combination of 18% chrome and 8% nickel.

In addition, stainless steel with blend well with commercial appliances, it won't chip, and it's simple to clean. On the downside, scratches will reveal themselves and you'll notice a tinny sound with sinks that have a thin gauge. On average, a stainless steel sink will run you about $350-$800.

Enameled cast iron is another sink material option. It comes in lots of colors and excels in strength and beauty. The surface of cast iron is "fire polished" to obtain its vivid color and deep gloss. Also, the thickness of it makes its surface resistant to acids, and provides outstanding protection against chipping, scratches and dents. Lastly, because of its density, cast iron has amazing heat retention properties that help water stay warm longer. Expect to pay about $300-$1,500.

Solid surface is made of synthetic sheets that are formed by mixing a mineral compound with polyester and/or acrylic resins. It can be molded from the same piece of solid surface that's used for the countertop. There are an array of colors and designs available to choose from. Also, when scratches are made, they can be sanded out. Expect to pay about $300 to $700.

A composite sink is also available in many colors. Composites are typically made from quartz compounds mixed with acrylic resins. As a bonus, they can be shaped into a connected countertop space and knives can be used on them because they won't leave marks. Also, they are stain resistant and it's safe to place hot pots and pans on composite sinks. Expect to pay about $350-$500.
