Kitchen Ranges
A range offers the combination of an oven and a cooktop. In most models, the same heat source is used for both the oven and the cooktop. However, some professional models offer the perks of having gas burners and electric convection ovens.
Ranges are available as freestanding, slide-in, and drop-in styles. A freestanding range generally sits next to your refrigerator or between your cabinets. They are designed with a bottom storage drawer and typically have controls on the back of the unit. Freestanding ranges are the least expensive of the three styles, but you will also have to deal with the inconvenience of food crumbs and other small articles falling between the range and whatever it is placed next to.
With slide-ins, the gap is minimized between the range and its surroundings. Also, the controls are generally in the front of the unit. Drop-ins look like they are built in to your countertops. They generally cost a little more because you have to have additional paneling and cabinet support installed.
The prices will vary depending on what type of cooktop and oven you want. The cheapest models are those that use electric coils as a heating source. Electric smooth top ranges are more expensive and gas burner ranges are even more expensive. Expect to pay the most for a pro-style range.
